The Beholder 05:34
I've been all around the way and god knows I've seen better days- I found myself just to say, "hey... You're different than I imagined. The city air was there to give me the chills When my love told me, "love don't pay the bills" Sent me walking down the road until I stopped under the roof I'm standing. Now all the holes left in my shoes and my jacket buttons coming loose Are just another verse in these blues I'll be writing until I die. It's how the lights come on when it's getting dark Or the occasional wedding in the city park That remind me that the better parts out way the times we cry. Some people smile and they're faking I hope it's not out of sympathy For my current living situation You know- cause' that's alright with me It couldn't just be me who sees it (the beauty all over) You've gotta sit down and look through my eyes; I'm the beholder. Yeah. Now I've seen coins fall in my hat- atleast enough to keep me fat But it's the people who stuck around to dance That made me really happy. And sometimes it's hard to pug my ears, so forgive the heart-to-hearts I hear But it's the fart jokes, not the "I Love you Dear"'s That made me want to keep laughing. I like to watch the news to keep up to date through that TV store display case- But I'll look to you to see a pretty face And the clouds for a pass-time. And if I was a paint I'd paint a picture; If I was a plumber I'd fix a fixture; But I'm unemployed, so I don't do dick, sir- Is that really a crime? Some people smile and they're faking I hope it's not out of sympathy For my current living situation You know- cause' that's alright with me It couldn't just be me who sees it (the beauty all over) You've gotta sit down and look through my eyes; I'm the beholder. So don't measure life in your good timing. The sun goes down, the sun comes up A million times before you ripen. And hold your breath in your chest To fill that empty space when you can't believe you're not content. I can't believe I'm not content with the sun in the sky- For that beautiful ruby red that they left after the fight... If beauty's the beholders, is it hits to give? I think I'll try... But you've gotta sit down and look through my eyes. You've gotta sit down and look through my eyes.

about

I released the Beholder when I was 20 years old. Most of the songs are short stories with strong characters. At the time, there wasn't a lot going on in my life and creating these small universes felt an appropriate use of my time. The opening and title track was written while touring British Colombia after having watched a homeless man from the window of my hotel for a better part of the afternoon. That was an unshackled time. The rest of the story songs are sandwiched in by the Fishbowl which is an account of my personal struggle with drugs and aimlessness. This album wasn't possible without my now lifelong collaborator, Erik 'Lobo' Gilbert.
